The 2nd South Lancashire battalion of 7 Brigade, 3rd Division was one of the units that moved north to Ypres following the end of the Battle of La Bassée in which they had seen action during October, 1914. They moved to Merris on 31st October then on to Locre on the next day. On 5th November 2nd South Lancashire moved into reserve positions near Hooge and on 7th November took over part of the front line there. The enemy artillery targeted their new trenches on 8th November, resulting in 13 casualties. One of these was Frank Neal.
